Making Money From Your Website Without A Product (Part 1): Membership Sites

Doorway to a brighter futire with your home businessAn alternative way to generate additional income from the Internet is via membership sites. With this method the basic idea is that once people sign up, you then have a recurring stream of monthly or annual income from the subscription payments of those that choose to stay as members of the site. Any niche that involves a product has the potential for a membership site.

Of course, in order for a membership site to work, its members need to have some sort of incentive to continue paying their monthly subscriptions. You will therefore need to ensure you update the site with new content regularly, as you would with a blog. It’s not enough to throw up a site, charge a monthly fee and then forget about it, expecting the money to come rolling in month after month. The only thing that will happen in that scenario is that your members will very quickly lose interest and not renew their subscriptions.

Having a site forum is a great way to retain their interest, as it provides a place where they will get in the habit of going to chat, exchange ideas and just socially interact in general with other members. The site could be aimed at a particular cultural niche for the same purpose.

What you charge for this service, as with selling any product online, is down to the standard practice of testing, to find the optimum price people are prepared to pay. I’ll leave it to you to do the maths, but even 50 members @ £10 per month… month after month… mounts up to a very acceptable sum after a relatively short time.

Starting your own site needn’t be a daunting thought. If you have a computer with internet access and can copy and paste you’re ready to go. There are, needless to say, many software packages available that will take all the hard work out of it for you, and are relatively inexpensive when you consider how few members you’ll actually need to cover your initial costs. All you will need to do is customise the header of the template that comes with the programme (and you can get a freelancer to do that for you) and you will then have all the tools you need to perform the necessary admin tasks and generally manage the site. You can also get a built-in affiliate system and an autoresponder facility so you can send out e-mails to your subscribers and inform them of products you feel they may be interested in, and as far as putting new content on is concerned, that’s just a matter of copying and pasting whatever you write on your computer’s word processor function straight into the template.

To keep your subscribers happy, sending out a questionnaire is an excellent way not only to find out what they like about your site, but also to see if there is anything they would like to see there that isn’t currently featured. And yes, there is software available that can make this process really simple too.
